St Cuthberts, Bradford

Our team was appointed to carry out a comprehensive package of conservation and repair works to a historic church in Bradford, a Grade II listed structure steeped in architectural and cultural significance. The scope of works included:

  • Full roofing replacements using traditional materials in keeping with the historic character
  • Hot lime repointing to address failed joints and improve breathability
  • Installation of masonry indents to replace severely weathered stonework
  • Structural repairs to stabilise critical elements of the church fabric
  • DOFF cleaning to gently remove biological growth and surface contaminants from the stonework

Challenges & Solutions

Working on a Historic Structure

Challenge:

The building’s listed status required all work to adhere to conservation best practices, using traditional materials and techniques to preserve its historic integrity.

Solution:

Our skilled heritage masons and roofers collaborated closely with the conservation architect and local authority. All replacement materials were carefully sourced to match the existing fabric. Lime mortar mixes were hand-prepared on site, and indents were shaped and tooled in line with original detailing.

Lime Mortar Curing in a Damp Structure

Challenge:

Due to the persistent dampness in the structure and the typical Yorkshire climate, curing of the hot lime mortar posed a significant challenge, risking delays and potential failure if improperly set.

Solution:

We implemented a staged approach, carefully monitoring weather windows and using hessian coverings to protect freshly pointed areas. Where necessary, dampened coverings were applied to slow the drying process, allowing carbonation to occur naturally and reducing the risk of shrinkage or cracking.

Weather Conditions

Challenge:

Unpredictable and prolonged wet weather impacted exterior works, particularly the roofing and repointing phases.

Solution:

Works were phased and sequenced to ensure internal spaces remained protected, and temporary roof coverings were installed during key interventions. Lime work was paused during unsuitable conditions and resumed when relative humidity and temperature were optimal.

Outcome

Despite the challenges, the project was successfully delivered to conservation standards, enhancing both the structural integrity and aesthetic character of the church. The use of traditional materials and sympathetic cleaning techniques revived the natural beauty of the masonry, while the roofing replacement provided long-term protection against the elements.

The completed works ensure the church’s continued role as a community landmark and place of worship, while securing its fabric for generations to come.
